  La Fundación Danilo Pérez

I.                   History

·         Origins

Foundation Danilo Pérez was established in 2005, but their work originates 25 years ago in Panama when the Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez begins to offer musical education to young people and kids of all ages and levels. Their efforts take him to the creation of a dream in the year of 2003, the Panama Jazz Festival, one of the most distinguished jazz festivals in the world The Panama Jazz Festival.

 

·         Purpose

This Foundation offers musical education, and more generally, opportunities for the human development. Its purpose is to provide growth opportunities for youth and children to develop their maximum potential regardless of their social status and economy.

 

·         Vision

Vision without action, as the old proverb says, is a mere dream. Vision with action is the base of the force and the success of the Foundation.

 

II.                 The Panama Jazz Festival

·         Concerts and classes

The Panama Jazz Festival is a well know concert organized by the foundation. The 6th Festival included artists like Wayne Shorter and Chucho Valdés, two winners of the Grammy Awards and living legends of jazz and Latin jazz. By then the Festival collect more than 20 thousand people including more than 650 students of all America that attended classes with the institutions that collaborate with the Festival, we can mention the New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, the Golandsky Paino Institute and the Conservatorio from Puerto Rico.

 

·         Scholarships

The Festival works as a bridge between Latin America and the rest of the world offering as a center of auditions for admission and scholarships for all the educational institutions mentioned before. In 2009 there were more than 80 auditions and more than ¼ millions of dollars in scholarships, many of them exclusive to young Panamanians.

1.      Instrument: This scholarship offers a musical instrument to each Panamanian student with talent and exceptional discipline that do not have the resources to buy the instrument.

2. Music Teacher: This scholarship offers stay, transportation and access to all the events of the Panama Jazz Festival a musician in the interior of Panama that has contributed to the local culture maintaining the artistic development in their living and regions.

3.      Musical Studies: Open scholarship for talented Panamanian and exceptional discipline in all ranges of age and this cover all the expenses for the musical studies in the best universities and conservatories of the world.

4.      Golandsky Piano Institute: Open to the pianist of Panama and the rest of Latin America, covers all the expenses of the intensive course of Golandsky Piano Institute in Princeton University, USA.

 

III.              Program

A.     Educational

1.      Children´s Program: This program offers an interdisciplinary and multicultural experience for children´s of 4 to 14 years old and use the music as tool for the social development.

2.      Professional Seminar: With the help of the National Institute of Culture (INAC), the foundation offers variety of seminars dedicated to the musical teachers of the country.

3.      Education First! : This program brings the best teachers of music in the world to teach in the Foundation with courses in different subjects, especially the ones that not taught in Panama.

4.      For the music: Is a one day seminar that explores the different historic and philosophy aspects of music.

B.      Others

1.      Technology Program: This program offers training in sound engineering and production with the teachers of Berklee College of Music.

2.      Literary Program: Invites the writers to the Panama Jazz Festival to present their books with the objective to promote the reading in the musicians and children´s.

3.      Dance Program: Invites the dances and therapeutics of the dance to the Panama Jazz Festival to work with the children´s of the Infant Program and give dance classes during the clinical.

4.      Berklee Internships: This program invites the students of Berklee College of Music to do practices in cultural material and music in Boston and/or Panama.

5.      Volunteer Program: this program is one of the pillars of the Foundation and the Panama Jazz Festival. People of all the ages offer their services to help in the organization and execution of the events that the foundation offers during the year.

 

IV.              Headquarter in Panama

The Foundation is located in the Antiguo Conservatorio in Casco Antiguo (in front of Plaza Herrera), a historic district designated by the World Heritage by the UNESCO.

A.     New Projects

1.      Library and Museum of Music:  this library will be the first in Panama dedicated to music in general and the Panamanian music in particular. His collection includes books, recordings, written music, videos, etc.

2.      Jungle wood: is a musical camp interdisciplinary that is in the Panama Jungle and provides the student a chance to learn about nature and teach how to appreciate the bio-cultural diversity. This program becomes possible together with the Earth Train organization (www.earthtrain.org).

B.      Funds

There are many ways to support the work of the Danilo Pérez Foundation: cash contributions, donations of materials, corporate sponsorships, presents, and donations for the programs and specific projects.
