Last week the Economist ran an in-depth article regarding the impact of the Panama Canal expansion on the Panamanian economy.  The article is a must read for anyone who is or is thinking about living or investing in Panama.
It gives one of the best overviews of Panama's economy and the reasoning behind the expansion that I have seen.

I have always felt that the Panama Canal expansion can have a significant impact on Casco Viejo. As the Economist article notes, several multinationals, including Dell, Hewlett Packard and Caterpillar, have already moved regional operations centers to the Canal Zone in anticipation of the expansion. Since all of this activity is within several minutes drive from Casco Viejo, we anticipate that many of the executives who are relocating to Panama will consider living in the Casco, or at a minimum, will use the Casco as their first choice for dining and entertainment.
