Look under "what is culture" in Google and you’ll come up with a dozen answers. But what remains a constant is that humans develop through it, express themselves through it, raise as a society with it. We become better individuals and societies because of it.

Cultural movements have been crucial during different types of crisis; cultural programs have been known to effectively eradicate poverty and crime from the most difficult areas. It is a bridge between social classes, as raw talent can be born anywhere. When talking about a country’s identity is the flame that lights up big fires! And when talking about the economy, there are very few economic engines that can match the intensity, diversity and long term effects of cultural industries.

From music to cuisine, humans dig culture and never get bored of new, better and more interesting products of it. When it goes "touristy" it is abandoned right away, though. But if it’s done with honesty and quality, it runs a long mile and becomes a win- win for everyone around it.

Casco Viejo is becoming Panama City’s epicenter for the best cultural events and activities. People who assist to these events eventually fill in the Casco Viejo with their presence and create a vibrancy that creates employment and feeds creativity to entrepreneurs. A positive cycle that generates more of it.

So why not invest in culture? Many don’t know how. Here are 5 easy steps to invest in Culture in Casco Viejo.

1. Open Up:  if you have an unrestored building already and are still working through your plans, at least rent it out. There are several young artists that could take over raw spaces (as long as they are safe or even if they are shells they can come up with great temporary stuff!).  La Casona and Diablo Rosso have proven to be fantastic models to break the ice at "unproven" places. They attract the right visitor and, by the way, get wonderful reviews from international media.

2. Pick a cause, get involved: There are a couple of NGO´s working on cultural programs that focus on children in the Casco Viejo. From the Danilo Perez Foundation Jazz school, to the community afterschool program and a modern dance class that is changing the lives of kids in the barrio. Learn more about them here.

3. Be a CascoConsumer: buy art directly in Casco Viejo! from pieces made out of recycled materials to digital art, young artists are exposing their work to the market.

4. Organize an event: an artistic soul yourself? Pinta Panama Art Auction, an event that has been growing year after year was born out of enthusiasm.  Adding yourself to an established event helps. It is all about synergy!

5. Lobby / Connect / spread the word:   Tell a friend!!!! sometimes is as easy as that.  Public relations and web is always welcomed. The more, the merrier... And if you can add some civic pressure about getting more and better art events, programs, education, etc... even better!
