The final countdown for the Panama Jazz Festival 2010 has started. This year, the event will be dedicated to Sonny White who was a Panamanian pianist from the 20´s who played with international music stars such as Billie Holiday, Willie Bryant and Frankie Newton.

One of the special things about this festival is that it brings recognition to Panamanian musicians, often forgoten in Panama, but had glory days outside. "Nadie es profeta en su tierra", but slowly Danilo is changing this old saying (No one is profet at its own country).

Another unique aspect of the festival is its education component. Since 2008 and through a historic long term donation made by the Casco Viejo developer Conservatorio S.A. the Danilo Perez Foundation was able to open a Jazz School at Plaza Herrera, Casco Viejo. From there, young talent from the poorest areas in Panama has found its way to famous schools such as the Berkley Conservatory of Music. A wild change of life for these kids who are now coming back to teach others and help create a cycle that would open doors to other children.

Finally, the Panama Jazz Festival is a labor of love of Patricia, Danilo and everyone working at the Foundation. It is an herculean task that we are proud to support and hopefully through their school they´ll be able to nurture and continue to grow.
