Last night, Panama had its very first "heavy metal" concert! and we enjoyed the hell out of it. I didn´t realize how many heavy metal lovers we had in Casco Viejo, and probably they didn´t realize I was one of them as well. In Panama, "headbangers" don´t tend to be out in the public wearing weird TShirts all the time. Especially now that my generation "grew up" and have cleaned up their act (we work in banks... real estate!) it was incredibly cute to see everyone trying to fit in their old Metallica, Slayer and so forth t shirts (yes, they´ve kept it for at least 20 years).
The concert was being held at the Figali Center (horrible acustics), 20 minutes away from Casco. The good thing was that we could be really close to the stage, where these monsters of metal where putting a fantastic show. Those guys haven´t slowed down with time! their act was straight to the point, no fussing around, just as it should be.
I remember my husband´s first encounter with the heavy metal crowd in Panama. It was in Casco Viejo. Filtro Medusa was playing at the old Casona. You have to think that in the States must people glue together slam dance and general violence with heavy metal. In Panama, our crowd is much more "tranquilo". Everyone was at the concert, EVERONE. Meaning: aunts, grandmothers, nices, 8 year old kids with too big for them Tshirts running around and dogs. Street dogs always make an appearance. So, when the concert started, everyone got their own spot, as if watching a classical orchestra play. Just like a "String Quartet" or something. Nobody slam danced, no yelling, nothing. Everyone just listening and smiling. Maybe a little bit of head movement. Kids running around. With the dogs. At the end of the song, everyone clapped and sayd "yeah" and whistled. My poor husband almost died of laughter. He said he had never seen something like that, ever. Even more: the only guy who eventually decided to do a slamdance (alone) was covered in sweat after 2 seconds (I mean, Panama is hot, and if you start bouncing you get really wet), so his sweat was going all around. What do you think people did? get away! no way I´ll get covered with this guys´sweat!!! are you crazy???.
Last night´s concert was a bit more on what you would expect, people jumped up and down, made funny "crazy" faces to the camera and five guys even tried to slam dance (didn´t last long though,....). Metallica was able to get our "best" metal behaviour out and it was great. I´m sure they where puzzled though, at the beginning, when no one was really bouncing but listening....
For me, that is the sign of being a real fan! when you are actually into appreciating the music.

Got them myself!!!! they are mine... mine!!!!!
