At Panama´s Historic City


Yesterday, the old Club Union in Casco Viejo got boarded up, which is a clear sign that they´ll start construction really soon. Rumors in the street have say there will be plenty of demolition, hopefully they´ll be supervised by Patrimonio Historico closely as there is a lot of beautiful historic structure inside.

This property has been quite controversial. After being the upscale club for the social cream of Panama, it was taken by the military regime and made into a military social club. After the invasion in 1989, it became a ruin and ever since it has stood there as one of the most desirable properties in Casco Viejo. Bought by the Decameron group and re sold to a New York developer, a parade of plans have gone through, some pushing extreme designs which where opposed by the public and historic preservation experts because of its radical character within a UNESCO site and the historic category of the building.  Finally, a set of plans was approved that kept more in touch with reality, however volumes seem to be maximized.

Up until now, the empty ruins served as an interesting backdrop to different art shows and even the filming of Daniel´s Craig James Bond movie called Quantum of Solace.  We are excited about the revitalization of this project which could be a new important landmark in Casco Antiguo if done properly.
