Yesterday we had an interesting couple coming to the office. He is a broker and a surfer (throw in some snowboarding as well!) and was looking for a place to invest. His main goal was to get away from cash and transform it into hard assets. After his research about the country he felt some specific pockets had the right combination of safety and opportunity. He was looking something that, in his own words, "couldn´t be replicated", and therefore Casco Viejo was a natural fit.

At the beginning of the market crash and the financial crisis we blogged a lot about the fundamentals of Casco Viejo and how it supported a true investment value. Following the patterns of other historic cities that have been revitalized throughout the globe, we are glad to report that properties in Casco have held quite better than in other places where there isn´t a similar historic protection.  Uniqueness, limited quantity, protection from overdevelopment, location within a country that serves as a hub between two continents, historic richness.  While some of these characteristics may seem subjective, they have a very real effect when creating economic activity and therefore long term value.

Most of the historic cities experimented a marked appreciation when hotels stepped in.  Casco Viejo is in a sweetspot where several hotels are being built, but yet only one (3 bedrooms only) is currently open. For this particular investor, being here at this moment was important. As a surfer, he most be sensing there is a good wave coming up!
